Thrwrap.
Marlene startled. Stapling. Another sound to haunt her.
Flump.
A fat file hit the secretary’s desk. Not an egg splatting.
Marlene shivered at the memory.
“We don’t have to entertain tonight. You’re upset.”
“I’m fine!” Her apron snapped together as she grabbed her keys. “I need more eggs.”
Plink, plink, the rain against her car. Her lungs were so tightly squeezed together she couldn’t breathe. We don’t have to entertain.
Marlene frowned. She refused to cancel now.
“Ahh-whaaa.” Mouth round, air pushed out. A tried and true stress reliever.
Time was running out. Her lead foot could change that.
Popfloosh, the tire burst. Plunk, plunk, the flat tire against the pavement. Then screeeeeaaaaaeech, the breaks begging the tires to stop.
The world blurred and spun. Until the last sound, the worst of them all. Fluwap. Schuwacrunch, Marlene’s car against the girl’s car. Metal clawing at metal.
Then blood. And lifeless eyes.
“All rise.”
“How do you plead?”
“Not guilty.”
Thrwrap. This staple pierced its fangs into her check, attaching it forever to her legal bill. PAID clearly stamped across the bottom.
“You’re free.”
“Hmmm?” Marlene tried to feel something.
“It’s over, Marlene. You’ve been found not guilty.”
Not guilty. But not innocent.
She wasn't innocent.
Just happened to survive. Stupid enough to go out during an ice storm. Like the other women.
Lucky Marlene.
Until tomorrow when news got around…
“Did you know? Marlene was found not guilty.”
“Hmph. By a judge, maybe. But we all know she killed that girl.”
